Since March 1, 2026, an enhanced e-service is available on the Latvija.lv portal, allowing residents to apply electronically for the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
The improved solution, developed with the involvement of Codex, expands the accessibility of the EHIC service by making it available through the Latvija.lv portal.

The service provides a single access point and clear visibility into the application process.
The possibility to apply for an EHIC card electronically has already been available. The enhanced e-service on the Latvija.lv portal complements existing solutions by offering an additional access channel and a unified environment with transparent information about the application process.
As noted by Aleksandra Kozlova, Deputy Head of the Service Management Department at the National Health Service:
“The availability of EHIC card application on the Latvija.lv portal is another useful public e-service for residents. The demand for these cards at the National Health Service is particularly high during active travel seasons in summer and winter, when queues may form in person. The e-service provides a convenient way to apply remotely.”
The European Health Insurance Card entitles individuals to receive necessary or emergency medical care in European Union and European Economic Area countries, as well as Switzerland, under the same conditions as residents of those countries.
During the development of this e-service, Codex focused on clear user experience, secure authentication, and integration with existing government information systems. As a result, a unified and user-friendly service has been created, complementing existing digital solutions.
